Like no the AI doing [some doofy antisocial thing that humans also do] does not mean they are the same if the AI can do it a million times while the human does it once. Have we learned literally not one thing about massively scaling bad things, are all these takes a prank call, what is happening

@pronoiac as if I would expose my fragile ego to being bested by a pencil sketch

@chrisjrn nah, though I’ll give you a premium if Matt Levine has ever written exasperatedly about it

@chrisjrn one devalued cryptocurrency an hour (yes the entire currency)

I just misread the phrase “freelance editor” someone’s bio as “freelance idiot” and brb ordering business cards

I'm hosting a webinar about trust and safety on the fediverse this Thursday, Dec 8th at 12pm Eastern. It's an introduction to the state of content moderation and community safety here.

I hope it will be useful to people at civil society organizations who have perhaps heard about Mastodon and the fediverse and would like to know more about where there are gaps in funding and services, and places where orgs could potentially help augment what's already happening.

Part of a CTO’s job: tell people to stop making new hammers and use one of the many hammers we already have lying around.

Effective immediately Twitter will now be known as OnlyKlans.

My issue is not with N*zis. Trash people and sociopaths will always exist.

My issue is with the violence inherent in insufficient moderation coupled with a "use CW!" culture that denies the self reflection that would allow Mastodon users to realize that outside of 4ch*n, many Black users' *worst online experience ever*, was on Mastodon.

If you don't follow Black users and listen to them, you would never know this.

in Norway, "up and not crying" is a not uncommon response to "how's it going" type questions, and I feel like that's a very reasonable standard to hold oneself to especially nowadays

I've been hearing predictions of another housing crash coming up so I'll send out my obligatory reminder that buying property with friends and comrades is a great idea but you should start thinking about establishing yourself as a legal entity now to do so. NASCO helped me out completely for free spending all together like 3 hours teaching me and my old housemates how to go about this back when we were considering it and I learned so much about how to collectively buy and own a home.

in the good timeline, GPT finally trains humanity to understand that someone who's eloquent is not therefore automatically trustworthy

The Turing Test poisoned the minds of generations of AI enthusiasts, because its criteria is producing text that persuades observers it was written by a human.

The result? Generative AI text products designed to "appear real" rather than produce accurate or ethical outputs.

It *should* be obvious why it's problematic to create a piece of software that excels at persuasion without concern for accuracy, honesty or ethics. But apparently it's not.

MAID, eugenics

“A veteran and former Paralympian told a parliamentary committee that a caseworker from the Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) offered her medical assistance in dying (MAID), a week after the veterans affairs minister confirmed that at least four other veterans were offered the same thing.

“Retired Cpl. Christine Gauthier, who has been trying to get a wheelchair ramp installed at her home for the past five years, testified on Thursday that a caseworker told her that they could give her assisted dying, even offering to supply the MAID equipment for her.”

I wash my face the old fashioned way.
I go down to the river and beat it against a rock

@aubilenon It's the closest answer I've gotten so far, but I do need some sort of management interface - I have a lot of one-offs and use playlists more than I listen to whole albums, and keeping playlists sync'ed between devices through dragging and dropping files sounds like a nightmare.
